How Social Media Impacts the Global Tourism Industry

This September 27th is World Tourism Day, a celebration of all that is great about the worldwide tourism industry at large. In the past decade, one of the areas that has had the greatest impact on the age-old industry is Social Media. TripAdvisor is the world’s largest travel site and has more than 200 million reviews and opinions and counting. Its impact is not to be disputed, particularly on an industry that relies heavily on positive feedback from online user-generated content.

User-generated content has long been established as the more credible and authentic option over sales based literature and the holiday-maker or business traveller’s preference. But, it is not just TripAdvisor that is making an impact. With the world’s largest Social Media Network (Facebook) home to 800 million active users, its reach in terms of reviews, images, videos and status updates cannot be highlighted enough.
